Chile might be the best country of all of Southern America to be explored by rental car, caravan or camper:
one can drive through untouched nature from the Atacama Desert in the north to the perpetual ice in the south. There is hardly any traffic and the crime rate outside of cities is marginal. The roads and pistes remote from urban centres are in a rather bad condition; therefore one has to cut back in some ways. For this very reasons we abandoned delicate luxury and high-tech in our custom-built campers. Even though we rent out vehicles in mint condition and maintain them constantly, technical problems can occur nevertheless and this far away from the next breakdown service, too. Basic requirements are technical comprehension and spirit of adventure to fully enjoy the trip to the end of the world.
