Where will I pick up my car ?

Our office and cardepot is in Talca, 250 km south of the Chilean capital Santiago. Coming from Santiago airport you reach Talca with trains and public buses in about 3 hours. It is not possible to claim your car on day of arrival cause of legal reasons - the possibility of accident is higher after a long distance flight. We suggest you travel to Talca by public transport and stay in Hotel Casa Chueca. Please state your hotel reservation in the booking. On the next day you can claim the car well rested and start your journey. Handing over and redemption in places differing from our office in Talca will cost extra. In Santiago we suggest to stay in Hotel Monte Carlo - located central with car-park security.

What do I have to do if my car has a breakdown?

Our cars are no older than 3 years and checked after each tour. Anyway, breakdowns can still occure. Defects on cars will be payed by our insurance, included wrecking service in easy reached areas. Depending on typ of car (Nissan, Mercedes, etc.) different garages are responsible. Only these are allowed to do repairs costing more than 50,- €. You will find a complete list of authorized garages under service adresses.
If the car has to be towed, please contact the wrecking service directly. The phonenumber is printed on the emergency card which is given to you with the car-documents. You can speak French, English and Spanish on the phone. The car's number of insurance has to be mentioned. It is printed on the emergency card as well. The wrecking service will be payed by the insurance - tire- and battery-breakdowns are not included.
If you have any problem please call our contractors. A list of our co-operators nearby you can find on this web page as well.

In any case please refer to our Chilean office, telephone: (+56) 71 197 27 57, mobilephone:
(+56) 9 850 162 11 or (+56) 9 850 249 35, email: info@trekkerchile.com.

In remote areas there is no infrastructure such as telephone or mobile reception. If a wrecking service can be reached it could take them more than one day to come. Without mechanic basic knowledge this areas should not be visited. In general patience is a necessity. European services culture you will find in Europe but not in South America. Flat tyres will be repaired and are fully serviceable if the tissue is not damaged. Garages to fix damaged tyres are called “Gomeria” in Chile and will be found all arround.

Which currency in Chile?

The means of payment in Chile is the Chilean Peso (CLP), confusingly it is abbreviated with the dollar sign ($). We suggest to carry along US$ or € in cash as well as traveller cheques. At the airport money can be exchanged at reasonable conditions (1US$ = 490 Pesos, Octobre 2007). A favourable alternative is the withdrawal of cash (Pesos) with the debit- or credit card at one of the ATMs in the bigger cities, which are labelled with a Cirrus-, Plus- or Maestro sign. The most favourable card is the debit card with the Cirrus-sign. Most hotels and shopping centres offer the service of paying by credit card.

I only speak English. Will that be a problem?

Although very few people even know what a foreign language is, one can travel in Chile without speaking a lot of Spanish. Of course, travelling is so much more fun and rewarding if one can understand and also speak the language. A language course beforehand would not be a bad idea and is without doubt the best souvenir. Courses are offered at reasonable prices at the Casa Chueca.

What is the difference between a caravan and a camper?

Our Caravans are smaller, partly they consist of four wheel drive, have no toilets or showers in the passenger compartment, but most of all they do not have access to the driver’s cabin. The campers are more luxurious but therefore only suitable for good pistes or asphalted streets. They offer space for several people and have direct access to the living quarters. The huge Camper 1 is permitted in Chile as a truck therefore the toll is higher on toll roads.

How is the toll calculated?

All our vehicles possess an automated toll registering system. With the system you are allowed to use all roads in Santiago without buying a daily pass in advance. Trekker Ltda. will cover all costs which resulted from the toll registering. The device will beep when the toll is registered, it will beep once, twice or four times in case the toll is registered correctly. If the device beeps three times, please call our office in Talca, as in this case the device is not working correctly.
The system of the automated toll registering system will be expanded in the long run on all of Chiles’ roads; the installed device can then be used in all toll stations. In that case Trekker Ltda. will as well cover all of those arising costs. Should the toll be collected by a associate of the toll station, you are expected to pay for it.

How is the quality of the vehicles rented out by Trekker Ltda.?

All our vehicles are subject to permanent maintenance and control. Every 5000 kilometres an oil change will be made, the oil filter will be replaced and the functionality will be tested. We advice our guests to call upon this service every 5000 kilometres even during the rental period. You can use this service at every authorised repair shop. As a matter of fact Trekker Ltda. will cover the costs for the maintenance.
We pay attention to the toughness of all our materials. All tyres which are in use constitute of at least 3 mm of profil depth. This guarantees that one will not reach the mandatory 1.6 mm in Chile. Furthermore, we use new tyres and do not take advantage of "vulcanization" which is quite common in Chile. We are glad if you inform us about your concerns and critics regarding the technical details and bodyworks of our vehicles. Our bodyworks have reached a state of construction which is almost indestructible. We test the functionality of all our vehicles in detail to ensure you an travel experience without any unpleasant incidents.
Our vehicles are only used for a certain amount of time or kilometres, so you can be sure to receive a vehicle as good as new.
As a matter of principle all outer damages will be corrected before every new renting, in the event of damage one has an overview of the actual occurred damage.
